Pharmacy staff at Walgreens locations across the country called out of work on Monday to protest harsh working conditions, leaving some stores closed or critically understaffed. Organizers told CNN that hundreds of workers participated in the organized action, which is expected to last through Wednesday. The walkouts come just two weeks after dozens of pharmacy employees at CVS, America’s largest retail pharmacy chain, walked off the job in Kansas City. But the short-term interest rates the Fed controls directly have already risen sharply since early 2022 — from near zero to a range of 5.25 to 5.5 percent now. And while a rate increase may be unlikely this month, for short-term traders, the big questions remain: Is the Fed done, and when will interest rates finally decline? An Unheralded RecordFor one thing, the interest rate environment is unusual. Short-term rates — specifically, for 3-month Treasuries — are higher than those of longer duration — particularly, for 10-year Treasuries. In financial jargon, this is a classic “inverted yield curve,” and it often predicts a recession at some point in the future.

A trio of economic reports on Tuesday found the U.S. economy generally facing slowing inflation, a weakening but still challenging labor market and diminishing odds of an imminent recession. Yet inflation remains a concern for many businesses, especially smaller ones, according to the August small business optimism index from NFIB. Although the panel of economists sees the economy slowing in the quarter that begins Oct. 1, they also see a reduction in the odds of a recession. The panel forecasts a 48% chance of a recession, down from 50% a month ago and 56% in July. At the same time, the economists see the unemployment rate rising from its current 3.8% to 4.5% by next summer.

Currently the “days supply” of electric vehicles – a measure of the number units on dealer lots relative to how quickly they sell – is now twice that of new vehicles overall. The biggest bargain among electric vehicles currently, whether you lease or buy, happens to be one that’s going away soon. Meanwhile, 23 states and Washington, D.C., according to the Economic Policy Institute, will implement higher minimum wages on Jan. 1. States that are not seeing minimum wage hikes in 2023 still tie their base pay to the $7.25 per hour federal rate. Workers who depend on the minimum wage are also much more likely to be people of color and living in poverty. Raising minimum wages can also help increase consumer demand and put money back into local economies, said Holly Sklar, CEO of Business for a Fair Minimum Wage, a national network of business organizations, owners and executives that support higher minimum wages. "Putting needed raises in minimum wage workers' pockets [is] really the most efficient way you can boost the economy," Sklar said.
If the measure was applicable for a January 2024 increase, the minimum wage would go up about 8%, for example. So despite record-high inflation sitting well above 5% this year, those earning minimum wage in Vermont won't see fully corresponding raises. If tips do not bring worker's wages to the full minimum wage, businesses are required to pay out the gap. The federal minimum wage remains unchanged at $7.25 since 2009, though President Biden did give a boost to federal employees earlier in his presidency, raising their minimum wage to $15.
